April: Alex goes down to braid at World Equestrian Center in Wilmington. Decides to download a vegan dating app, Veggly, before she gives up on dating apps altogether (she had googled it as a joke and was surprised to see one actually existed). She doesn't realize that the app uses real-time location, so she opens it on Saturday night before going into work, and drives back home the next morning.
During that time, Jake messages her (sending her a paid 'carrot' nonetheless), asking what brought her down to the area. By that point, she was already back up in Cleveland but it was the start of it all (including Jake joking that Alex catfished him by making him think that she lived near him). But he didn't seem to mind because he visited her, nearly weekly, in the ensuing months and through the summer (sometimes with their new kitten, Ron) until Alex returned the favor in November, moving down to Dayton.

Alex insists on tagging along with me as I go to pick up a totally mundane package at FedEx, since it's close to Target. I then have to hide the package in the truck to combat her insatiable curiosity. Once home it is tucked away in the darkest corner of my messiest tool box, only seeing light occasionally as I check on it, and waffle on whether it's the right one to give to the one (I'd canceled orders and changed ring styles and sizes more than once by now). Decoy shipping box placed in plain sight on my desk just in case.
From there a few casual and low stress phone calls to ask for her parents blessings and all I had to do was figure out how to surprise the woman who reads me like a damn book. My first real attempt was to covertly hire a cleaning company to handle the house on a day that it was all we had planned before having some friends over, to ensure she'd be free without suspicion. That morning she woke up feeling a little crummy so a proposal would have to wait. Inspiration struck me the night before my shift, when I knew she'd be busy getting her nails done at the salon I left work early to buy her a dress (two because I'm a coward) and left her an urgent message that I had a very expensive package on the porch so she'd make a beeline home after the salon. She arrived to find the dresses hanging up in the entryway with a note to pick one and be ready at 1730. I told her work was lousy and I wanted to see the riverscape fountains before dinner. I know the jig is up at this point but I make an honest attempt at a poker face as we walk along the pre planned route Jerm (photo cred) and I had come up with, still working on the perfect things to say. When we hit our marks I stalled for a few moments before throwing my fanny pack aside and getting down on one knee to ask the love of my life to spend her life with me.
